Eric started learning music at an early age under the guidance of his mother, Paule Awuy, a pianist and music pedagogue, whose origin is Quebec, Canada. At the age of 13, he decided to start learning trumpet through a private teacher. He then decided to learn trumpet in more depth at the Hull Music Conservatory (1979-1985) and Montreal Music Conservatory (1985-1988), both in Canada. He graduated from this conservatory in 1988 with highest honors, the Premier Prix de Conservatoire, in the field of trumpet and chamber music.

After graduating, Eric was accepted as a professional orchestral player in Montreal, Canada and at the end of 1988, performing with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra under the baton of conductor Charles Dutoit.

Afterward, he frequently played with other orchestras, such as the National Arts Center, Quebec Symphony Orchestra and the World Youth Orchestra, which took him around the world, performing in Moscow, Berlin, Paris, Buenos Aires, and New York. On that occasions, he also had the experience to work under renown conductors, Zubin Mehta and Pierre Boulez.

As a soloist, he also performed in numerous recitals and being guest soloist in North America and Europe,such as in I Musici de Montréal ensemble. In chamber music, Eric had played with Brass Five Quintet, one of the best groups in Canada, and been awarded “Laureat”of the International Brass Quintet Competition in Narbonne, France. But beyond that, turns out Eric had other talent, namely as a conductor. He had been a guest conductor at Notre-Dame College Orchestra, World Youth orchestra, Indonesian Youth Orchestra and Twilite Youth Orchestra.

Upon returning to Indonesia in 1994, Eric works as a freelance musician by participating in various orchestras in the country, such as Erwin Gutawa Orchestra,
Jakarta Simfonia Orchestra, Jakarta Sunfonietta besides giving workshops and music playing clinic.

In 2006, he was member of the Jakarta Arts Council as head of the Music Comitte then as General Affairs director until 2013.

Besides playing music, Eric is also active in the field of marching band as a jury in various competitions in the country, hoping that one day these Indonesian units can achieve the international performance level.

Currently Eric is a Yamaha endorsement artist, playing with the Yamaha Xeno Artist Chicago trumpet series.
